Statement by the Hon. Stephen Harper on free and fair elections in Lebanon. For immediate release: Tuesday, March 01, 2005

OTTAWA – Conservative leader and Leader of the Opposition Stephen Harper issued the following statement today:

“The current situation in Lebanon is changing positively, with the Lebanese people actively expressing their democratic will. On behalf of the Official Opposition, the Conservative Party of Canada, I extend my full support for free and fair elections in Lebanon.

“The Conservative Party continues to support the immediate withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1559, and furthermore, the Conservative Party continues to support the United Nations investigation into the terrorist act against former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.

“The Lebanese people’s positive progress towards free and fair elections, the withdrawal of Syrian forces, and the United Nations investigation into the assassination are three pillars of the Conservative Party’s foreign policy approach to supporting a democratic, secure, and independent Lebanon.”
