1. Lebanonís Independence Day marked by demonstrations

The week surrounding Lebanonís Independence Day was marked by 2 main demonstrations. On the one hand, students demonstrated against the Syrian hegemony over Lebanon and asking for more sovereignty. On the other hand, an ironic state sponsored demonstration to show Lebanon allegiance to Syria to the international community.


2. Video tape of Hamadehís attempted assassination accomplice disappears

According to the Beirut Daily ďAl SafirĒ, the security camera video tape provided to investigating authorities, which filmed Hamadehís attempted assassination, has disappeared. It is dais that the video contains clear evidence about the accomplice, which was supposedly found murdered.


3. Amnesty calls for the release of Samir Geagea

Amnesty International has called for the release or re-trial of political prisoners in Lebanon, most notably, Samir Geagea, the former militia leader. An Amnesty spokesperson was quoted as saying: "In this case we are dealing with the highest court in the country but there are also serious flaws in other courts, I think the whole judicial system needs an overhaul," Hamad said. Canadian authorities should ensure that their funding targets the overhaul of the judicial system of Lebanon.


4. Rockets fired on Israel from Lebanon

The Martyr Ghaleb Awali Group, a relatively unknown organization has once again staged attacks against Israel form Lebanon. The Lebanese government says it is investigating the matters. Such attacks provocative attacks can unsettle the Lebanese-Israeli border. RCPL has requested that the Canadian authorities appoint a Middle East peace envoy that aims at solving these issues, and encourage Lebanon to disarm all non-governmental organizations, as per UNSCR 1559.
