Syria refused to receive the families of the Lebanese detainees

On November 2, 2002, a delegation of relatives of 174 Lebanese citizens captured or arrested in Lebanon between 1975 and 2002 went to Syria for a pre-scheduled appointment with the Minister of interior Mr. Ali Hammoud with the following human rights groups. The Syrian authorities refused to receive the families of the Lebanese detainees, known to number in the hundreds for their political position. The detainees are held illegally and without trial.

RCPL encourages the Syrian government to pursue talks with the families and human rights groups to determine the fate of the detainees. RCPL also encourages the Lebanese government to request the Syrian and Israeli authorities to release all Lebanese citizens seized in Lebanon immediately.
